Old Bede

Dunesend's wise old baker

A wizened halfling from distant eastern lands who runs Dunesend’s bakery, which also contains a half-dozen tables which can also serve as the village’s only indoor communal gathering place. Old Bede can usually be found by the fire pit, smoking an exotic pipe as he strokes his long gray mustache.

The Hordebane’s interference which killed the Warden stressed out Old Bede so much that he returned to the bakery and locked the door. He didn’t want to have a heart attack. By the time he recovered enough and heard that the Hordebane was going to try to fix the problem they got all muddled up in, they had already departed into the desert. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to tell them off for how foolish they were being. If only they realized that their interference and subsequent failure to rout the queen would mean Dunesend’s certain destruction! Where could he and the other villagers go to escape certain death? (23-24 Goodmonth, 1468 CY)

Old Bede works very hard to convince Lotho and the other villagers that the Hordebane are dead and were unable to protect them. They must make preparations to either kill the next people to emerge from the desert—they must be instruments of the queen sent to destroy them—or flee to…somewhere. They elect to hole up in the dwarven tower after making the village look like it had been abandoned. They begin doing 30-minute practice drills to achieve this effect, each village taking responsibility for their own home and such…most villagers believe this is a good plan. At least the dwarven tower has strong stones to protect them (28 Goodmonth, 1468 CY)

Lookouts announced figures coming out of the desert, so Old Bede quickly gathered the entire village in the dwarven tower. Despite Lotho’s believe that this was truly the Hordebane, Bede was skeptical and anxious. He insisted that the boiling oil trap be sprung to buy the villagers more time. Being a halfling, he was easily overpowered by Lotho and Fawma when the Hordebane was able to convince the majority of the villagers that they had been successful (1 Harvester, 1468 CY)

Old Bede may or may not have tripped Lilac Derbyshire as she walked past him (1 Harvester, 1468 CY)

Irjan visited Old Bede in his bakery, offering to share a drink of the finely aged ale that he had discovered in Fortress Ironfell. Bede slipped something into Irjan’s beverage, and pulled Irjan’s entire life story out of him before Chris and Lilac realized that the dragonborn was missing. Furthermore, Bede satisfied himself that Dunesend is probably safe from the Queen of the Drylands (1 Harvester, 1468 CY)
