Tanner - Session 8

Today isn’t a very happy day. Our mission here has not been successful, we didn’t get to save any dwarves (happy gruff dwarves sparring all day, praising their creator and his hammer!)… no, there are no survivors, save one, a visiting half-orc maiden who calls herself simply Ell. I won’t go into details of the condition we found the monastery in, it’s not rated for general consumption (no, it’s definitely only for people over the age of adulthood).
I was woefully wrong in my hopes outside the gate to just knock really loudly and shout up to guards that we were there to save them and warn them of a Threat! It’s a good thing my friends threw their hands over my mouth and stopped me because we were able to surprise the orcs and orogs within. Inside the temple we found an orc crone defiling the altar (I must note that although I do not worship Moradin I have profound respect for his children and I get a little mad when people smear poop all over his anvil). We quickly put an end to the orcs but alas too late for some seven dwarves. Poor That Bitch! He didn’t cry out but I could see by his beard that he was full of sorrow and quite beside himself with grief. As much as I respected the deceased dwarves I felt my temper rising as Skien abandoned all else to pile their corpses together and prepare to light them on fire. Without even figuring out if there were any living dwarves down(the-secret)stairs in need of our rescue, and if living what they thought about a death cleric just torching the bodies of their friends and relatives. I’m no expert on death (I give it a wide berth) but I was just baffled that it came before the possibility of living dwarves and dangerous enemies!
Thankfully, I was distracted from this train of thought (as Skien was distracted from his) by the appearance of Elle. Another magic user and scholar, perhaps someone to chat over the arcane with? I didn’t have much time for pleasantries admittedly, and L seemed quite shaken up (being the only survivor thanks to a secret library) and hungry.
Thus regrouped, we descended the long, windy stairs. I was utterly unprepared for the carnage. Not a one had survived. :(

Sorry, I teared up for a minute there.

We destroyed all of the dwarf murderers. I think Ell’s powers may compliment our team, but for now she’s with us out of necessity. It helps that she’s a healer, since Aviella has been kidnapped by her family (I know how that is) and That Bitch is busy in mourning. After the fight, Skien came up to me accusing my good aunt Maa’zai of cursing him! I thought he had looked a little clumsy during the fight, but his accusations were unacceptable. Aunt Maa’zai is really a sweet lady, even if she’s intimidating and a loner/lonely. When the others went to check out the far end of the room, he explained that he probably had ticked her off… accusing her of necromancy? My aunt would never! I assured him that there was NO necromancy in the entire series of rituals in the restoration of Kartenix and basically that he ought be ashamed of himself. Really. But I don’t think he got the message.
I was saved from having to storm away by the cry of our companions — more orcs coming up the outer stairway! Standing at the top of the stairs, we had a clear shot and the element of surprise to take out the drudges and archers with little consequence (magic bolts made it easy for me, even though it was the middle of the night). Skien ran down the stairs to face the lone commander and the only other complication was the small nest of drakes, one of whom mauled Diony pretty badly. Irjan picked up a rather nice bow. I hope Eleanor doesn’t see him with it, since there’s no pretending that it’s a walking cane.
The possibility of more orcs is evident. Our fears were correct, they’re coming up out of the tunnels somehow, and L thinks there must be some way to seal them off. That was our plan A, warn the dwarves and have them seal the tunnels, but now with no dwarves (except That Bitch who isn’t local) it falls to us. We’re taking a rest out in the courtyard because it has the least carnage, and because Skien has assured us that his ritual of Alarm (different from Jalissa’s Eye of Alarm somehow, I’m no expert on rituals even though I kicked butt helping my aunt) will wake him up if any more orcs come up the stairs, and that we should have plenty of time to get back to the landing before they come up. I hope he’s right…
(PS one consolation is that Skien admitted that he may need to apologize to my aunt. Damn right!)
